The Lake Garda Weather Guide

The weather at Lake Garda is one of the many reasons I love it here. It’s milder than in much of the surrounding area, and that’s all thanks to the lake itself—there’s something about it that softens both the heat of summer and the chill of winter.

Rain can fall in any season, but you'll notice more of it in spring and autumn—especially in March, April, October, and November. July and January, on the other hand, are usually quite dry. Keep scrolling for more about what to expect, season by season...

Lake Garda

When to Go

Not easy, as it depends a lot on what you are looking for. Also, the climate around the lake does vary a bit, with the north of the lake being windier and slightly colder.

These are our suggestions regarding the various months and the weather you can expect:

Lake Garda Weather in Summer

July and August

If you enjoy long, hot days spent lazing on a beach and swimming in warm, balmy water, then July is probably the best, but do expect crowds.

Early to mid-August is much the same as July, although in late August you might get the occasional late afternoon thunderstorm. These are often a pleasant relief from the heat and don't last long. Expect temperatures around 30°C and water at around 23°C.

Spring and Autumn Weather around Lake Garda

May, June and September

These are the best months to visit Lake Garda, in my opinion. The weather is generally still warm enough to go to the beach, but the water, particularly in May, can be too cold for swimming.

September and late June are fine for swimming if you don’t mind 20°C water. Remember that the water of the lake comes from the snow and ice melting on the surrounding mountains—dip a toe into the water in early May, and you'll know what I mean. A minute in the water is a great way to cool off instantly from all that sunbathing.

During all three of these months, you can still enjoy long, warm evenings, time on the beach, and great sunshine without the hordes of tourists that you will encounter in July and August. Accommodations are often more affordable, too.

April and October

April and October are often wet and miserable. You might get lucky and get a few decent days in between, even an entire week towards the end of April or in early October; however, generally you are looking at around 18°C, rain, and water at about 10°C.

Winter

Not many people visit during winter so you can have the lake to yourself. It does get cold, but December, January, and February have lovely, crisp, clear days. The scenery is really spectacular on these clear days and you can see for miles. Definitely not beach weather, though.

Lake Garda's weather is at its worst in November—wet and miserable—never visit in November unless you really have no choice. The only place more miserable in Veneto during November is Venice.

Questions I am often asked about Lake Garda's Weather...

The best month to visit Lake Garda weather-wise

The best month to visit Lake Garda weather-wise depends on personal preferences and the activities you plan to engage in. The months of May, June, and September are my favorite months.

What is the average temperature of Lake Garda?

The average temperature of Lake Garda varies throughout the year. During the summer months, from June to August, the average temperature ranges from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), making it ideal for swimming and water activities. In the winter months, from December to February, the average temperature ranges from 4°C to 9°C (39°F to 48°F), and it can be colder in the evenings.

Does Lake Garda experience strong winds?

Yes, Lake Garda is known for its strong winds, particularly in the northern part of the lake. The two most famous winds are the "Ora" and the "Pelér." The "Ora" is a south wind that typically blows during the afternoon, bringing cooler air and creating ideal conditions for sailing and windsurfing. The "Pelér" is a north wind that blows during the early morning, often generating stronger gusts. It is important to consider these winds when planning water activities or boat trips on the lake.

Does Lake Garda freeze in winter?

Although Lake Garda is a large lake, it rarely freezes completely in winter due to its depth and the moderating influence of its surroundings. However, during particularly cold winters, the lake's surface may partially freeze near the shores and in the northern regions. Ice formations can create a beautiful sight, but it is important to exercise caution when venturing onto frozen sections of the lake, as the thickness and stability of the ice can vary.
