You come to Italy thinking it will be a trip. You leave knowing it was a beginning
You have no doubt read our guide (click to view) discovering the best beaches in Tuscany, which, although titled "Beaches Near Rome," is all about Tuscan beaches. I know the name might be a little bit misleading, but to be honest, the best beaches near Rome are the beaches in Tuscany.
Anyway, enough of my waffling; let me share some gorgeous photos of these beaches taken by my friend Alberto Franceschini. Alberto, lucky fellow that he is, lives right in this part of the world, and the comments, under each headline, about the different areas and the beaches are his.
Ditch the tourist traps. If you want the real Tuscany by the sea, you go to Porto Santo Stefano. This isn’t a postcard—it’s a working port where fishing boats still bring in the catch of the day and the espresso is strong enough to fuel a morning of adventure.
From here, you jump on a ferry and escape to Giglio, an island so gorgeous and calm you’ll forget the mainland exists. We’re talking hidden bays, water so clear you’ll question reality, and not a single crowded beach in sight.
Back in port, you eat. Grilled octopus, spaghetti with sea urchin, crisp white wine—all with your feet practically in the water as the sun sets over the fishing boats.
This is where Tuscany meets the Mediterranean with style, soul, and zero pretension. Don’t just visit. Live here for a few days. You’ll thank me later.
If you'd like to spend some time here, then have a look at these hotels.
Talamone, the doorway to the breathtaking Maremma Nature Reserve, is perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and offers stunning views and easy access to some of Tuscany’s most unspoiled landscapes. For a map and hotels, click here.
The rolling hills here offer stunning views of the islands of Giglio and Elba, while lakes filled with pink flamingos flow down into beautiful beaches in this southwestern corner of Tuscany. Where should you stay around here? Well, this is my pick when it comes to hotels in Castiglione della Pescaia.
Step out of Italy’s well-worn tourist path and into a wild, breathing landscape. Welcome to the Parco della Maremma—over 25,000 acres of untamed coastline, whispering woodlands, and rolling Mediterranean scrub that feels like a world set apart.
Think of this place as Italy’s final wilderness frontier. It’s where the Tuscany of postcards gives way to something older, quieter, and truly alive. Forget crowded beaches—here, miles of golden sand meet turquoise sea without a sunbed in sight. You’ll walk or even ride in on horseback to find coves so quiet you'll hear only the waves and the wind.
This isn't just a park; it's a sanctuary. Wild boar roam freely, deer move through the morning mist, and foxes dart into the brush. Bring your binoculars—the wetlands are a theater for migrating birds, turning the sky into a living tapestry.
Lace up your boots. Trails wind from fragrant pine forests to dramatic coastal cliffs, with viewpoints that’ll stop you in your tracks. But the truest way to feel this land’s soul? On horseback, like the legendary Tuscan cowboys—the butteri—who’ve called this place home for centuries. Riding through the golden light of the macchia is an experience you won’t forget.
History here isn’t locked in a museum—it’s woven into the landscape. Ancient watchtowers rise from hilltops, standing sentinel over a land that time hasn’t tamed. You can touch these stones, climb their steps, and gaze out over a view unchanged for hundreds of years.
Start your adventure in the lovely village of Alberese, your gateway to the wild. Pick up a map, chat with the park guides, and let yourself step into a different Italy—one where nature still writes the rules, and every trail leads to a quiet kind of magic.
Come breathe deep. Come wander free. This is the Maremma—and it’s waiting for you.
If you are planning on visiting Tuscany, you might as well be based in Florence. If you are, then try one of the hotels we recommend.
